Mumrah (named after the evil mummy in 1980s cartoon Thundercats) were spawned in the pit of South-East London’s comprehensive school system with the inclination to herald the dawn of the century with something fresh and exciting. The year was 1999; the air was minty and the kids were alright. And the kids were:
• Wee Man: vocals/guitar/supernatural disasters
• Nixo: bass/vocals/occasional beards
• Jimbo: guitar/vocals/photogenic gurning
• Chuckles the Clown: vocals/drums/wearing slippers
Starting out as a ska-punk band, influenced by the likes of Goldfinger, Reel Big Fish and The Specials, the band soon became tired with conventional structures and repetition of clichéd song formulae. Taking inspiration from more diverse and inventive artists such as Mad Caddies, Mr. Bungle and Cardiacs, the band mutated into a throbbing, thrilling, ululating combo, blasting out sonic bursts of progressive punky fun, with smatterings of funk, disco, metal and more besides. The result was a beaming smile, four faces long. But something was missing; there was a horn-shaped gap in Mumrah’s musical maelstrom. Meeting a trumpeter at a gig, and e-mailed by a trombonist via the band’s website, Mumrah enlisted:
• Tiny Tommy Toot-Fruit: trumpet/vocals/gooey, gooey profiteroles
• Mickey T-Bone: trombone/vocals/bumpkin yarns & pasties
With all six members involved in songwriting, the music has become a delicious mix of styles, including Wee Man’s grounding in punk, Mickey’s hip-hop leanings, Jimbo’s penchant for Cuban jug-rubbing and Chuckles’ prog-tinged eccentricity, focused into four-minute mini-epics and two-minute thrashing anthems; some are paeans to lost loves, some are snarling satires, others are proudly dedicated to the pleasure of pleasure itself. For the best part of four years the band has brought mirth, sorrow and confusion to audiences around London and surrounding areas with a highly energetic live show – sometimes manic, sometimes humorous, always entertaining
