Deine Lakaien Информация о группе The way they see themselves is obvious in their name; the duo feel they are servants to their audience. However, this relationship is by no means one of submission, Ernst Horn (producer / keyboards) and Alexander Veljanov (singer) find this job to be a creative challenge. They invariably treat their followers with a lot of respect, demonstrated in their concerts by the bow that Veljanov takes after every song. The main attraction to Deine Lakaien (the name "Deine Lakaien" could be roughly translated as "Your Lackeys") is in their originality; they have nothing - absolutely nothing - to do with mainstream, which today’s pop industry has been flooding us with. Their careers started curiously. "Looking for singer who enjoys experimenting" was the advert that Horn placed in a Munich city paper in 1984. Veljanov replied to this whilst he was studying for a film and theatre degree. Their debut "1st Album" (1986) was solely financed by them; they carried the discs into the record shops by hand, as no record company had yet recognised their potential.. Their new sound even managed to penetrate into America, where music magazines reviewed their cult album, and eventually the indie label Gymnastic classX (today: Chrom Records) gave Deine Lakaien their first contract. Horn, who stayed in Munich, and Veljanov, who moved to Berlin in the late eighties, have found that their independent spirit has proved attractive to open-minded people. The melancholic mix of minimal electronics and well-chosen classics found more and more followers. Deine Lakaien played at the Documenta exhibition in Kassel in 1992, where they unveiled their indie classic Dark Star". At intervals of two or three years new studio albums were released which managed to get into the sales charts because of or in spite of releases via independent channels. These new albums were introduced live to the audience either in amplified form with a large group of musicians or unplugged as an acoustic duo. "Kasmodiah" (1999), the first album for Sony Music, managed to get into the top ten of the Media Control charts, just as its successor "White Lies" (2002). The latter has enjoyed a lot of exposure on several Deine Lakaien tours. Their DVD debut features a recording of the two-hour concert in the Linden Park in Potsdam. It is complemented by an interview and backstage sequences as well as another live clip of the medley "Reincarnation" and "Life Is (a sexually transmitted disease)". The double CD of the same name contains the two bonus songs "Stupid" and "The Game" as well as the Potsdam show. "We did not want to use any superfluous attention-diverting tactics, exploding effects, or bright lights, but a show that concentrates on music," Veljanov comments on the result. "We separated the set into three parts. The first third is full of electronic songs. After this we start playing an acoustic bit, at first just the two of us and then the other musicians join the stage and we finish the acoustic part as a group of six. There is a healthy rock blockbuster finish as a finale." Songs from all six albums can be heard on "Live in Concert". Although sixteen years have passed between the release of the first and second concert numbers "Colour-ize" and "Generators" they sound like they are both from the same mould. The reason for this is in the new arrangement of the songs, which were practised and learnt by all the musicians. Horn and Veljanov got themselves some excellent aid for the "White Lies" tour: B. Deutung, (cello, ex The Inchtabokatables), Ivee Leon (violin & backing vocals), Sharifa (violin & backing vocals) as well as the guitarist and keyboarder Robert Wilcocks. Deine Lakaien only needed someone to develop their music in a visual way five years after their first recordings, because till then they were purely a studio project. Since then vocalist Veljanov has become more accurate at describing his own music. "I don’t make a show" he emphasises; his stately movements on the stage are not rehearsed, but are there because of a certain amount of dignity in the music. "However, now and again I try and use a bit of irony in my announcements," the man with the passionate bass-baritone adds with a smile. "It is important for us to present the music as intensely and densely as possible. To carry some of the more incisive colours and moods we use theatrical stage light instead of flickering rock 'n' roll lighting. We have an audience that doesn’t go mental, they listen for a long time, and eventually they are unstoppable and want encore after encore. The fans were ultimately the initiators of the DVD, Alexander points out: "Our last concert clips were on the video "First Decade" in 1995. It has long been unavailable and is haggled over for ridiculous prices. So we were very dissatisfied that we had made no more visual recordings since then. The fans' insistence is very important to us." Horn and Veljanov undoubtedly have their own agendas, but as mentioned above, they see themselves as servants of the listener.
