Powermad formed in 1984 in Minneapolis and released an EP on Combat Records. They subsequently signed to Reprise Records and released The Madness Begins EP in 1988, a cassette-only release distributed mainly via a promotional ad featured in some of the most popular metal magazines of the era. Readers were able to clip this ad and mail it off for a free copy of the EP.

Their first and only full length album to date, Absolute Power, was release in 1989. Other than a US tour opening for Overkill, a video featured on MTV of their single "Nice Dreams" and a strange cameo appearance in the bizarre David Lynch film Wild At Heart, Powermad never really achieved notable commercial success. Their albums, however, were critically acclaimed and are considered collector's items today by fans of thrash and speed metal music.

Powermad has resumed touring as of 2007 and are working on a new full-length CD to be released.

On February 9, 2008 the band updated their blog on MySpace with a link to download The Madness Begins... and Absolute Power as unprotected mp3's.

In 2009, Charred Walls of the Damned, a metal supergroup featuring Richard Christy and Tim "Ripper" Owens, recorded a cover version of Powermad's song "Nice Dreams." The song will be issued as a bonus track on the Japanese release of their debut album on March 10, 2010.

Совершенно потрясный коллектив.Открыл его я при просмотре кинофильма "Дикие Сердцем" Дэвида Линча,в котором Николас Кейдж и Лора Дерн танцуют под павермэд на их концерте:

Музыка совершенно прекрасная,я должен сказать.Единственное,что не нравится,так это вокал-местами,где спокойно поёт-это просто Кай Хансен,а это не по-мужски.Когда визжит-всё отлично
Хорошие спидо-трэшевые риффы,технично и со вкусом.Очень многообещающий коллектив,жаль,что сдох едва родившись.ТАм какой-то реюнион был,но я за такими вещами не слежу.
Трэшаком это назвать тяжело.Всё-таки звук мягковат и почти всё на 1й скорости-очень быстрой.Ну и легковато для трэша,с другой стороны всё же ритм меняется и иногда часто.Такая группа слишком крута для раздела павер.
